Health & Welfare Financial Grants

Health & Welfare Financial Grants

Provided by Seafarers Hospital Society (SHS)

The Seafarers Hospital Society (SHS) is a long-established maritime charity (founded in 1821) dedicated to meeting the health, welfare, and advice needs of serving and former seafarers and fishers across the United Kingdom.

Whether you are currently working at sea, retired, or a family member/dependant of a seafarer, SHS offers confidential, direct support—ranging from emergency financial grants and fast-track medical care to free mental health therapy and expert practical advice.

 Health & Welfare Financial Grants

Unexpected illness, injury, or sudden life events can create financial distress. SHS provides direct grant assistance to help ease financial pressure:

  • Essential Living Grants: Direct grants to help pay unpaid essential bills, utility arrears, basic household items, and emergency costs.
  • Disability Aids & Adaptations: Funding for specialist equipment, mobility aids, stairlifts, and home modifications to help injured or elderly seafarers stay independent.
  • Respite Care Support: Financial help to fund short breaks or temporary care relief for unpaid family carers.

Who Is Eligible?

Support is available to:

  • Merchant Navy: Active and former UK merchant seafarers of all ranks.
  • Fishing Fleet: Active and retired commercial UK fishers.
  • Dependants & Families: Spouses, partners, widows/widowers, and dependent children of eligible seafarers or fishers.
