What this organisation does

The Merchant Navy Association (MNA) is a UK charity and membership organisation that brings together current and former merchant seafarers, maritime workers, supporters of the Merchant Navy, and their families. The organisation works to promote recognition of the UK Merchant Navy, preserve maritime heritage, support commemorative activities, and provide opportunities for friendship, mutual support and community involvement. 
The MNA describes itself as a national organisation that helps seafarers and supporters connect through local branches, events, campaigns and shared interests. 

Who can use the service

Membership is available to:
  • People who have served or are serving in the Merchant Navy. 
  • Individuals employed in the Merchant Navy under articles, including those who worked on foreign-going vessels, coastal vessels, ferries, passenger liners, fishing vessels and support vessels. 
  • Cadets and apprentices beginning a career in the Merchant Navy. 
  • People who support the role of the Merchant Navy and wish to remain connected with maritime communities through associate membership. 
  • Family members, friends and shore-based supporters with an interest in the Merchant Navy and maritime heritage.

The MNA offers a range of community, networking and representation opportunities, including:
  • Access to a national network of Merchant Navy members and supporters. 
  • Local branches that meet regularly for social interaction, friendship and mutual support. 
  • Opportunities to participate in Merchant Navy Day, Remembrance Sunday and other civic and commemorative events. 
  • Representation and advocacy promoting recognition of the Merchant Navy as the UK's "Fourth Service".
